Gold in India is priced per gram, with the most common purchase weights being 1 gram (coins), 8 grams (popular gifting weight), 10 grams (standard jewellery benchmark), and 100 grams (investment bars).
The per-gram rate is derived from the international gold spot price (in USD per troy ounce = 31.1 grams), converted to INR, and then adjusted for purity. 24K is 99.9% pure, 22K is 91.6% (the standard for Indian jewellery), and 18K is 75% pure (used in daily-wear designs).
When buying jewellery, the total cost includes the gold value (weight × per-gram rate), making charges (typically 8-25% depending on complexity), and 3% GST on the total amount.
