Dhanteras Gold Buying Checklist for Indian Families

Dhanteras is one of the highest-traffic jewellery days in India. Crowds, limited designs, and festival offers can push families into rushed decisions. A written checklist beats last-minute guesswork.

One day before Dhanteras, note the 24K and 22K per-10g references for your city and save screenshots with timestamps. Prices can gap up if global markets move overnight, so compare the morning board with your note before you pay.

Set a hard budget that includes making charges and GST — not just the metal value. Festival discounts often apply to making charges; they rarely mean gold is 'cheap' versus the benchmark.

Shortlist two jewellers in advance. Confirm BIS registration, ask whether HUID-marked stock is ready in your weight range, and clarify exchange rules for old gold if you plan a trade-in.

On the shopping floor, demand a breakup: gold rate used × weight, making %, wastage, stone charges, and GST. If a salesman quotes only a final round number, ask them to rewrite the invoice lines.

Avoid buying complex custom designs under time pressure unless the workshop timeline is written down. Many Dhanteras purchases are coins, light chains, or ready designs for a reason — they settle the same day.

After purchase, photograph the invoice and hallmark, store the bill digitally, and verify HUID when you reach home. If anything looks off, contact the jeweller immediately while festival service desks are still active.
